Complete and unabridged, and read with meticulous care, in this story Miles Standish and John Alden both seek the hand of the fair Priscilla. See the Mayflower abandon the first settlers as it returns to England. Feel the heated vision of the Indians, perpetually keeping their watch in the dark forest. Love and adventure collide in one of Longfellow's most famous works. Running time: 1 hour 30 minutes

Poetry in Motion

The Courtship of Miles Standish is satisfying on many levels. First, it was written in 1858 and gives us a view of the land, trees, rivers, and forests that this bountiful land once so graciously offered, and we so ungraciously polluted, denuded, and deforested. Second, it tells one of most important stories of America’s founding: that of Plymouth Colony, established by the Mayflower Pilgrims in 1620. Thirdly, and this is where BJ Harrison comes in, Longfellow composed this as a “narrative poem,” a story told in metered verse; in this case, Greek hexameter. Longfellow also used medieval vocabulary. I didn’t even realize either of these because BJ so fluently, smoothly, musically, and meaningfully narrated the story. I just knew the descriptive phrases and language were lifting me to higher realms of beauty and truth, and the rhythm seemed to resonate with the beat of my heart as I walked through the “forest non-primeval” listening to the human voice.
BJ Harrison has brought beauty into all our lives, if we will only take the time to listen…
