Really Great

Never having heard of Jerome K Jerome, I didn't expect much when I got this audiobook. But if you enjoy the humor of PG Wodehouse, you will enjoy this book. This travelogue starring three idle and ridiculous young men is surprisingly witty, informative, and at times even profound. Once again BJ makes the characters sparkle with a variety of voices and UK dialects. The descriptions of boating on the Thames above London in the late 19th century opened my eyes to a life I had no idea existed. I found myself often laughing out loud, sometimes deeply moved as I listened to it bit night after night before bed.

Great job projecting this story and capturing the feeling and attitude of the trials and tribulations of a boating and camping holiday in the 19th century. Some things don't change.
I particularly loved the introductory reflections on hypochondirasis. That for sure has not changed.
Wonderful

Perfect. BJ Harrison's voice is wonderfully suited to the text. I enjoyed every moment - often laughing out loud (thankfully not in public).
Gentle English Humor

The book dates from the nineteenth century. Trains now carry freight that once traveled by barge on the Thames, making the river more welcoming to casual travelers. Three such are the gentlemen in the boat.
The book started as a travel guide, and it shows to advantage. The historical reflections nicely show the importance of the river, dating back as far as records exist.
The humor - and there is plenty - is generally low-key. It is based on the foibles and inconsistencies of the three men (not to mention the dog), along with a bit of slapstick. The style is very different from that of P. G. Wodehouse, England's most famous humorist. (See elsewhere on the site for his works.)
As always, B.J. does a wonderful job voicing the characters.
If you would like a pleasant and (mostly) jolly trip on the Thames, this book is for you.
Three Men in a Boat

Three Men in a Boat, written by Jerome K. Jerome, was the first Classic Tales audio book I have purchased, although I have listened to B. J. Harrison's performances of many stories through his podcast. As with the podcast editions, Three Men in a Boat was absolutely satisfying. Mr Harrison takes care to express and exploit, for the benefit of the audience, every humorous turn and intonation of Jerome's work. The vocalization of the various characters were distinct and distinguished. The style was easy and unhurried. I grew comfortable in believing that the reader was the narrator plunking down his account across a hearth as we both lounged in great plush chairs. I look forward to my next acquisition.
Three Men in a Boat

Superb. The reading is extremely well done, with great care given to voices, timing, emphasis, etc. The story is British, so any particular word can be spoken differently so as to indicate sincerity, emergency, sarcasm, etc., and the reader does this beautifully. a fun book full of silly episodes. perfect for plane trips.
